This was to be City's first venture into the UEFA Cup having already played in the European Cup and The Cup Winners Cup.
City's opponent's in this 1st round clash were Valencia, who had appeared in three successive finals during the early 60's when the competition was known as The Fairs Cup
Valencia were managed by one of Football's all time greats, Alfredo Di Stefano.
Francis Lee opened the scoring after 7 minutes and Valdez equalised for the Spaniards 3 minutes before the interval. 10 minutes into the second half Adorno gave Valencia the lead but Rodney Marsh levelled inside 6 minutes. So 2-2 and all to play for in Spain a fortnight later.
