FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 26TH AUGUST 1989
… Bond and Smith were banished for the trip to Wolves, but it made no difference. Neither did Williams‘ heroic goalkeeping display; even his skill couldn’t prevent Wolves scoring twice in the first half hour. He had saved brilliantly from Butler’s volley on 10 minutes, but shortly after Wanderers took the lead through Dougherty’s ground shot.
Baker had a narrow miss but then McCarthy netted an unlucky own goal after 28 minutes when he deflected Evans’ harmless effort. The nearest City came to scoring was when McNab had gone off for Tolmie and the latter had a goal disallowed in the second half because Cunningham impeded ‘keeper Flowers.
