REPORT FROM IRELAND’S SATURDAY NIGHT 24TH JANUARY 1987
Wimbledon battered the Manchester City goal from the kick off and throughout the first half, it was only the Manchester ‘keeper Perry Suckling who kept the visitors in the game.
In the opening minute Wimbledon winger Carlton Fairweather beat the offside trap on the left but his low drive was pushed round the post by Suckling for a corner.
Twelve minutes later Vince Jones found space in the penalty box but his header from a Dennis Wise cross went narrowly wide.
The bombardment continued a minute later when full-back Winterburn drove in a powerful cross and the muscular centre forward John Fashanu’s diving header was superbly saved with one hand by the City keeper.
Wimbledon goalkeeper Dave Beasant was called into action when Peter Barnes beat two players but his shot went straight into the arms of the keeper.
Fashanu beat McCarthy on the right flank in the 35th minute and powered in a right-footed shot, but again Suckling came to City’s rescue by blocking the ball at the near post.
Wimbledon failed to break the deadlock even though they continued the second half in the same manner as they finished the first, continually pressing forward.
Again it was the City keeper Perry Suckling who kept the visitors’ hopes alive making a string of superb saves. City have now taken their run to 54 weeks without a victory away from home.
