West Brom slammed the brake on Manchester City’s unbeaten charge when they raced into a 13th minute lead at The Hawthorns today.
Don Goodman added the final finishing touch after Tony Morley had rolled the ball in from the left.
With better finishing from Andy Gray and Wayne Dobbins, in particular, Albion’s lead could have been more emphatic, yet it was City who often provided the better football in an incident-crammed clash.
… Albion, despite their lowly position, set a demanding pace, creating the better early chances.
In the ninth minute, Goodman linked with Lynex, but when Gray was set free on the left he shot wide of Nixon’s left-hand post.
In the 13th minute Albion had better luck when they struck a devastating blow to take the lead.
Morley’s low cross from the left was calmly converted by Goodman, with Nixon flailing to move as the ball whistled inside the post.
Half-time: West Brom 1 Manchester City 0
… City determinedly stuck at the task of breaking down the rugged Albion defence and twice went agonisingly close within a 60 second spell.
The 55th minute saw Stewart dive full length to head in a right flanking Gidman cross, only for Naylor to save smartly. He did it again when Lake drove in a powerful 18 yarder.
Twelve minutes from the end City tried a change of tactic, Varadi replacing Simpson to give the side three orthodox strikers.
… And there was an instant response for City, with Tony Adcock fastening on to Stewart’s through ball for a glorious 83rd minute equaliser, with that unbeaten run now preserved.
