The dense fog which threatened to cause the abandonment of this tie on so many occasions during the actual proceedings, stayed just that fraction above the danger zone to enable Albion to pull off a competent and well earned success against a City team. ,
Albion, fresh from two successive nap-hand League triumphs went for the hat-trick-and they succeeded with pulsating team-effort in which Ronnie Allen and Ray Barlow were outstanding.
Yet City, in fact, were never outplayed. They produced some clever play and attacked Albion on every opportunity, pushing as many as seven men forward whenever possible. Perhaps this was City’s downfall.
Albion counterattacked brilliantly and four of their five goals arrived after a City attack had broken down. An article by Tony Matthews published in the West Brom programme 11th January 1977
