FROM THE PRESS BOX

PAUL MACE WRITING IN THE BIRMINGHAM DAILY NEWS 2ND MARCH 1989
West Bromwich Albion were cruelly denied a spectacular victory over Division Two high flyers Manchester City here last night.
Chris Whyte’s 60th minute goal looked to have ended City’s best League run for 12 years.
But substitute Paul Moulden snatched an 85th minute equaliser to dent the Midlander’s own promotion chances.
Against a team with six successive victories under their belts, Albion winless for eight weeks, might have expected a demanding opening half hour.
The baptism was far from easy but they equipped themselves well and showed little signs of a lack of confidence.
City might have taken the lead in the fourth minute when Biggins sent Morley clear and his attempted lob was deflected to safety by Whyte and Naylor.
But Bartlett’s Pace down the right flank was consistently unsettling the City defence and from one dangerous centre Hopkins totally missed his kick.
… City brought on Hinchcliffe to replace Taggart as left back in an attempt to snub out Bartlett.
Naylor showed excellent positional sense to cut out a dangerous Megson cross in the 56th minute. But that paled into insignificance alongside the miraculous
one-handed save he pulled off to deny Gleghorn from point blank range.
The Immaculate Whyte Put Albion in front in the 60th minute when he rose above the City defence to head home Anderson’s free-kick.
Moulden snatched an equaliser for City in the 85th minute when he fired home at the second attempt after a brave save by Naylor.
