PETER GARDNERS ‘VERDICT’ FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 15TH APRIL 1978
City are in danger of having Europe’s door slammed firmly in their face if they persist in playing in this dreadful manner for the remainder of what is now a bitterly disappointing season.
The brutal truth is that City were pathetic against Albion at Maine Road, as they crumbled to their third home defeat of the season against a no-more than average side.
This was the Blues at their worst as they threw away two goals within six minutes at a stage when they could have been leading by the same score. They weren’t because of some abysmal finishing, particularly by Channon, who shot over when an open goal yawned.
Cyrille Regis scored an incredible goal in this match, even the City fans stood to applaud.
Best goal I ever saw and I’ve seen a good few. You’re right, the whole stadium applauded. What a team
Indeed we did ! I remember it well, a truly brilliant goal by a class player . I was lucky enough to meet him many years later at a PFA charity event in Manchester. An absolute gentleman .
