Watford will have to forget any thoughts of Wembley if this performance is anything to go by.
They may have picked up an easy tree points at Maine Road but they will find Liverpool a much tougher opposition in tomorrow’s FA Cup Quarter-Final replay at Vicarage Road.
Graham Taylor’s men were pretty bad, but then Manchester Ciy were pretty awful, and former Liverpool boss Joe Fagan must have learned little from his surprise spying mission.
Taylor confessed: “We looked very sluggish today, Anfield took a lot out of us and we know inside that we have to do again what we did at Anfield.”
If Fagan was confused afterwards, however, then wat can City manager Billy McNeill do next.
His team could have been two up after 20 minutes but nobody showed calm in front of goal.
Gordon Davies and Paul Simpson missed from positions where it looked easier to score.
McNeill said afterwards: “Times are hard. We are creating more than enough chances but we don’t take them and that is a recipe for disaster.”
Steve Terry scored the only goal, scraping a header across the line after a 73rd minute scramble.
