After two exhausting goal-less hours at Vicarage Road last night Manchester City won an advantage, if not a victory over Watford in their FA Cup fourth round tie, Paul Power called correctly when the captains tossed for choice of venues and so the second replay will take place at Maine Road on Thursday.
It was no less than this revived Manchester City team deserve. Although Watford missed the outstanding chance of the match. City produced the more imaginitive football on a bog of a pitch which made fluent movement extremely difficult and extra time a near farce as the weary players struggled to lift their feet out of the clinging mud.
Since the beginning of December, Manchester City have a better record than Manchester United and last night the new confidence in the side was much in evidence. It began at the back where the goalkeeper, Nixon, and the centre backs dealt efficiently with most of Watford’s crosses and allowed West, Barnes and the rest of the attack few clear glimpses of goal.
After half-time, with the deep-lying McNab opening up space near the Watford goal through shrewd distribution, City looked well capable of earning themselves a fifth round tie at home to Bury without further ado. However, the nearest they came to winning the match was when Coton flung himself hard to his left to push wide a swerving 20 yard shot from May…
