Mick Channon began the instalments on the £300,000 that Manchester City paid for him five days ago with a highly satisfying debut in which he set up two goals for his arch rival Joe Royle.
The England ace showed a high work rate, positional sense and hints of an explosive ability to take on defences in City’s 4-1 win at Walsall, and left no one in doubt that his arrival means a fight for places.
Manager Tony Book was smiling broadly later as he said: “I was very happy with Mick. He laid on two goals and that alone can’t be bad. But there was also a competitive spirit about our performance. We have three games on our Dutch tour to sort out our League side.”
Fans who assumed Royle would make way for the ex-Southampton man may have to think again. For while Brian Kidd worked ceaselessly in the first period, it was with Royle that Channon linked more impressively. Cannon declared himself “pleased with my start.”…
