From THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS… WHEN SPURS WERE BARNES-STORMED TOWARDS RELEGATION Article in the City programme 8th May 1999
If the Blues were still riding high, it was different for Tottenham. They looked odds-on certainties for the drop to Division Two and, at Maine Road, seemed to lack enthusiasm and verve.
The first Barnes inspired goal arrived after 19 minutes. The winger took one of his accurate corners to find Tommy Booth, who carefully lobbed the ball over a group of defenders to place it beyond Pat Jennings’ reach.
That was the only goal of the first half, Booth and Dave Watson governing the back four and Hartford and Gary Owen bossing the midfield. However, the second goal was inevitable, after 49 minutes, when Barnes headed under pressure into Tueart’s path in the penalty area. It’s doubtful whether Jennings even saw the finish.
It was Barnes’ turn four minutes later. The move started in the City half as Hartford clipped the ball forward to Booth, who, in turn, found Barnes via Owen. Peter beat off a challenge, drew Jennings before sending him the wrong way, and crashed his shot over the keeper’s head.
Another Barnes corner, another goal, that was No 4. John Pratt half-cleared the ball, but it went straight t:o Hartford, who thundered in a ground-level shot. Then, with five minutes on the clock, Tueart latched onto a pass-back by Pratt, raced down the City right, and found Kidd, who had time to pick his spot.
The Blues were still in with the slimmest of chances for the title, but Spurs were doomed. “We’ve a lot of hard work to do,” admitted boss Keith Burkinshaw; it was something of an understatement on the day. . .
