MARK LILLIS SCORES CITY’S SECOND GOAL
FROM THE PRESS BOX
KEN MONTGOMERY WRITING IN THE SUNDAY MIRROR 19TH JANUARY 1986
Former schoolmaster Gordon Davies gave trouble-torn Tottenham their third public caning inside one miserable White Hart Lane Week.
The former Fulham and Chelsea striker got the goal which launched City’s well deserved win with a first half header.
And he made the clincher for Mark Lillis three minutes from time to add to tottering Tottenham’s growing winter of discontent.
Spurs were booed off by their own fans, who had seen them concede eight home goals in eight days, without a solitary reply.
Only 17,009 people, their lowest League gate of the season, turned up, and they let the Spurs team of All Stars know exactly what they thought of their miserable efforts.
Spurs had a chance to equalise right after the break, when Clive Allen sprang City’s offside trap, but was foiled by ‘keeper Eric Nixon.
Spurs sent on Ian Crook for the angry Allen 12 minutes from time.
As he strode to the dressing room Alan glared at the Tottenham bench and growled “We are losing one nil for God’s sake.”
Only a few minutes after Clive’s departure, cousin Paul Allen had the cance to save Spurs’ faces. But he managed to shoot wide when scoring was simpler.
Then Lillis scored to leave Spurs really smarting.
