Former Mackem Dennis Tueart was the driving force behind City’s victory which took them into the 4th Round of the FA Cup and Joe Corrigan could also argue that without his athleticism it would have been Sunderland who progressed further.
It was Tueart who set up City’s first goal just before the half hour, he had already hit the bar before his header set up David Cross who’s header also hit the bar, however Asa Hartford was on hand to volley the rebound into the net.
The Blues were in total command and David Cross’ header seven minutes before the break eluded the Sunderland custodian and the crossbar to put City 2-0 up.
City continued to push forward and the Sunderland goal led a charmed life as both Kevin Reeves and again Dennis Tueart hit the woodwork.
However totally against the run of play Sunderland’s Chisholm smashed a 30 yard speculative shot past Joe Corrigan to make it 2-1.
It was a goal that brought Sunderland to life, and for the last 20 minutes of the game they laid siege to the City goal, however, it was then all down to Big Joe Corrigan, who earned his wage with two tremendous saves from Worthington and Pickering.
