City were 2-0 up from the first leg and began the game like they wanted to increase that lead as they attacked Stoke from the off, however they couldn’t create any clear cut chances, and it was Joe Corrigan who was the first keeper called into action as he had to make several saves as Stoke began to find their feet in the game.
Thanks to the City custodian and some glaring misses from the Stoke front line the teams went into the break goal-less and City still two goals to the good on aggregate.
Stoke continued to attack The Blues in the second half and eventually in the 80th minute Corrigan was beaten as Lee Chapman headed a Paul Bracewell cross into the City net.And before full-time was up Evans shot through a crowded goalmouth to equalise in the dying minutes
Extra-time sped by and then it was to be the first penalty shoot-out in English Cup history, and very exciting it was too. With the score at 9-8 in City’s favour, as Stoke substitute, Griffiths took the 20th penalty in the sequence and Big Joe Corrigan saved it to put City through to the 3rd Round.
