The game began badly for the Blues as Lee Chapman grabbed an opener for Stoke as early as the second minute.
Just a minute later a nasty collision between Joe Corrigan and Stoke forward Jeff Cooke resulted in Cooke being stretchered off and taking no further part in the game, The City custodian although plainly injured and in a lot of pain bravely played on until half-time.
Big Joe Corrigan did not appear for the second half, instead defender Tommy Booth took his place between the sticks, and it was credit to City that Tommy was hardly tested by Stoke. The Blues intense attacking finally paid off with 13 minutes left when Tony Henry’s deflected shot found it’s way past Fox for the equaliser.
