At the end of the season City decided to fulfill their obligation to St Helens and sent a side to Hoghton Road.
…The City board had not taken their commitment seriously and the town club, who had been preparing for the match for weeks, were far from happy with the strength of the opposition. St Helens had invited a number of their footballers, now playing for football league sides to make a reasonable contest  and considerable publicity had been generated in the area for the match. The crowd and the officials felt utterly deflated when only Trautmann and Andy Black from the City first team appeared. Bert was particurlarly upset and said afterwards “We managed to win 2-0 and I don’t think anyone could have cared less except for me. I felt, under the circumstances, that City might have sent a more representative side and I know the Town club were as disappointed as I was.
