2 GOALS FOR ANDY HINCHCLIFFE
FROM THE PRESS BOX
REPORT FROM THE SUNDAY MERCURY 18TH DECEMBER 1988
Shrewsbury found that Miracles rarely happen twice within a week despite another impressive demonstration in the art of goal poaching by former YTS boy Carl Griffiths
Two opportunist strikes by the Welsh youngster sent Shrewsbury, shock 3-2 winners at Leeds last week, to an improbable 2-0 first half lead. City hauled themselves level with two Andy Hinchcliffe goals.
In the ninth minute Griffiths pounced on an indiscreet back-pass by Ian Brightwell and shot into an unprotected net after side-stepping Andy Dibble.
Three instinctive stops by Ron Green And a goal-line clearance apiece by Doug Rougvie and Richard Pratly held Shrewsbury’s lead intact. Two minutes before the break Griffiths played a clever one-two with Alan Irving and Coolly buried the return pass wide of Dibble’s dive.
Shrewsbury. Even with seven men in defence were pressed to contain City as they launched attacks in a second half even more one way than the first
But it suddenly turned sour with two unsatisfactory goals by Hinchcliffe in the 66th and 73rd minutes.
Teenager Gary Osborne panicked into conceding a penalty when he lost the ball to David White and then pushed the City striker as he attempted to regain possession. Hinchcliffe’s spot kick gave the heroic Green no hope.
Then Hinchcliffe floated a corner over the head of Green who retreated as the ball landed, just inside his far post, his only blemish in another heroic show.
