Manchester City went skidding out of the FA Cup in disastrous style at Shrewsbury Town today, after manager Tony Book had protested angrily about the fourth round tie taking place on a treacherous Gay Meadow pitch.
An eighth minute goal from Paul Maguire and a second from Sammy Chapman (57) sent the Blues crashing.
They never managed to contain man-of-the-match Maguire, who skated easily over the slippery surface. And that left Book, chief coach Malcolm Allison and the City party even more angry that the game had ever started.
Maguire certainly gave the City defence a first half runaround, but had a spot of luck for his opening goal.
Maguire took advantage of slack marking by Paul Futcher to race clear. His shot struck keeper Joe Corrigan but rebounded back off the Shrewsbury man into the bottom corner.
City came back into it, but it took a fine Corrigan save to keep out Maguire again just before the interval.
Colin Bell came on for Kaziu Deyna after the break, but the agony continued when Chapman headed in Maguire’s corner to make 2-0 for the Third Division side.
Transfer listed Mike Channon went closest for City, seeing his shot come back off a post…
