FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 18TH NOVEMBER 1989
A goalless draw followed at Sheffield United, Melrose’s full debut, a result deemed to be fair on the day. The Blues were without McCarthy, Baker and Kinsey, yet performed solidly as a unit to cling on to a precious promotion point. Melrose’s day was marred by his having to be withdrawn at the interval with a viral infection, Simpson substituting.
The defences bossed the game, West and Henderson starring for United and restricting City to one real chance late on which Simpson put wide, and Reid and May being the Blues’ stars. McNab and Wilson had to combine their midfield efforts with sterling defensive work, McNab clearing a goal-bound Heffernnan hekadertoakgep the scoreline blank.
