REPORT FROM THE ABERDEEN PRESS AND JOURNAL 4TH AUGUST 1981
Having much more style and passing skill, Rangers should have beaten Manchester City more decisively.
Rangers could have widened the margin but their lack of finishing skill kept the scoreline down. Manchester City never really got any fluency into their play until the second half and their efforts left a lot to be desired.
Rangers opened the scoring in eight minutes. A far flung Willie Johnston corner was perfect for Jackson to head back for Derek Johnstone to cleverly swerve his header to the opposite side of the goal.
MacKenzie had a good run in on the Rangers’ goal but the ball didn’t reach Boyer standing in a perfect position to accept the pass.
From a McLean free kick Derek Johnstone got in a flying header and Corrigan had to dive to save at the far post.
At the start of the second half substitute Bennett was left with only Stewart to beat, but shot wide.
With 12 minutes left Willie Johnston sent a low swerving shot past Corrigan to complete the scoring.
