Manchester City restored pre-season morale by finishing third in the big Maine Road international tournament.
The boy Blues bounced back to beat Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven 3-1 after crashing by the same score to trophy winners Manchester United the previous night.
Paul Stewart and Imre Varadi, the strikers who had amassed 17 goals between them on the successful, five game Scandinavian tour, were again the match-winners.
Stewart scored twice to take his total in build-up games to 12, and Varadi hit the other as a City side containing six former youth-teamers brushed aside the best Holland has to offer.
Only when they were coasting three up did City release their grip, allowing Eindhoven to dominate for periods late in the second half.
“That was the one disappointing feature for me,” said team manager Mel Machin. “We can’t allow opponents to strike back once we have them by the throat.”
City’s display otherwise was highly encouraging, considering the comparative inexperience of most of the side.
Paul Lake ad Steve Redmond again demonstrated their ability to form a solid central defensive partnership, to provide the greatest hope for the future.
And there was a more composed and confident display from goalkeeper Eric Nixon, a bag of nerves the previous night.
A superb flying save four minutes from the end, in particular, made up for the errors against United.
The industrious Ian Brightwell set up Stewart’s first goal after 32 minutes, the striker taking the opportunity in fine style.
A string of Eindhoven errors eight minutes into the second half enabled Varadi to slam in the second and 60 seconds later, Stewart scored the third after his first attempt had cannoned back off the goalkeeper.
