The [Revie] Plan was first put into action at Deepdale.
… Most of the major correspondents took their places among the capacity crowd awaiting the dramatic unveiling of the new style. The newspapers had built up the story for days and the City players felt uner considerable pressure as they took to the field.
All teams started a season with high hopes and here the setting was a perfect arena for the City players. A ptch of newly laid turf, a clear sunny day and a large crowd.
They blew it, The Revie Plan was an unmitigated disaster from the start. Bill Leivers had been brought into the team at right full back with John McTavish playing as link man to Revie at Right Half. McTavish was injured early in the game and Leivers also received a knock. Preston, with their two talented attacking wing halves. Tommy Docherty and Willie Forbes surging through the midfield, broke down every move. Revie was left chasing shadows, while Tom Finney, exploiting City’s weakness on the right, cut the defence to ribbons. At the end of the game the City players trooped off the field with their heads down while Preston North End celebrated their resounding 5-0 victory.
