Ray Crawford scored twice as Pompey gained a hard fought victory over Manchester City in front of a Fratton Park crowd of 26,254.
Pompey went ahead in the ninth minute as Peter Harris went past Cliff Sear before sending in a low cross for Crawford to shoot into the roof of the net.
City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann made a succession of brilliant saves to prevent Pompey from increasing their lead in the first-half.
The visitors equalised three minutes before the interval when Ray Sambrook rounded Phil Gunter and sent an angled shot past Pompey ‘keeper Norman Uprichard. But the hosts snatched the winner on 80 minutes as Trautmann punched Ron Newmans shot straight to Crawford who smashed the ball home.
