Two goals each by Jackie Henderson and Jack Froggatt saw Pompey safely home against Manchester City at Fratton Park watched by 30,013. The result could have been very different as the visitors started brightly and Bill Spurdle was guilty of missing three early chances. Henderson trapped Alex Wilson’s lob before firing Pompey into the lead in the 27th minute and five minutes later Froggatt doubled the lead with a header. Three minutes after the break Peter Harris drew Bert Trautmann and centred for Henderson to tap into the empty net and the City goalkeeper brought off tremendous saves from Harris and Len Phillips before Froggatts powerful shot made it 4-0. City reduced the deficit when Billy McAdams swept past Duggie Reid and stroked the ball home as Mervyn Gill advanced.
