REPORT FROM THE BIRMINGHAM SUNDAY MERCURY 30TH APRIL 1989
An astonishing second half comeback stunned, Oxford and kept Manchester City’s promotion bid on the boil.
Trailing by two goals at half time, City fired in four unanswered goals in the second half to create a club record of 11 away wins in the season. They now look certainties for promotion to Division One.
David Bardsley and former City Winger Paul Simpson shot Oxford into a commanding lead and they might have had more goals, but for the saves of Andy Dibble.
But City stormed back with two goals in the first three minutes after the break.
Nigel Gleghorn pulled one back with an eight-yard shot following a corner and then David White beat Hucker In the Oxford goal with a 25-yard effort which deflected off the shoulder of Neil Slatter.
Oxford were on the retreat and they can see the third goal after 56 minutes as defender, Colin Greenall put the ball into his own net in trying to clear a centre by Moulden.
Oxford substitute David Leworthy was close to bringing the scores level when he attempted to chip Dibble but the keeper stretched up to make a vital save. Manchester City completed a remarkable turnaround when Ian Brightwell headed in a fourth goal from Morley’s, cross two minutes from the end.
