Manchester City’s pre-season plans have been hit by injury to key man Dennis Tueart, who is in danger of missing the four-match European tour starting on Monday.
The former England forward, a revitalising factor in the Blues’ great fight to avoid relegation last April, came off after playing just 25 minutes in last night’s 3-1 victory at Nuneaton.
And he told me gloomily: “I’m struggling. There’s a chance I won’t be fit to go to Portugal on Monday.”
Tueart’s trouble is in his right achilles tendon… “If there’s the slightest doubt, he won’t be coming with us,” said coach Malcolm Allison.
… Allison utilised virtually all his senior squad with two almost different sides in each half.
And it was after the break City looked more impressive with Steve MacKenzie taking the eye as he clipped in a glorious second goal.
Tommy Caton also finally got on the score sheet with a header, and he could well prove City’s secret scoring weapon in the new season.
The experiment of playing Roger Palmer at right back continued, and Allison says: “I want to give him a full game in this role on tour just to see how he shapes up under a lot of pressure.”
