MATCH REPORT FROM THE EVENING HERALD (DUBLIN) 30TH NOVEMBER 1989
Gary Crosby broke the hearts of managerless Manchester City with a late strike that kept Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest on course for a Wembley repeat.
Forest, winners of last season’s Simod Cup, went through to the third round of this year’s model, the Zenith Data Systems Cup, thanks to Crosby’s 87th minute goal that brought them a 3-2 victory.
That was so cruel on battling City, who had twice fought back to level through David White and David Oldfield after a Stuart Pearce penalty and a Franz Carr cross-shot put Forest ahead.
And there was more heartache for City when they got back in the dressing room to discover that they had slid to the bottom of the First Division after Sheffield Wednesday’s shock 2-0 win over leaders Liverpool.
