REPORT FROM IRELAND’S SATURDAY NIGHT 19TH APRIL 1986
David Campbell, the Nottingham Forest forward called up into Northern Ireland’s World Cup squad, wasted a splendid opportunity to put his team in their game with Manchester City.
Watched by national team manager, Billy Bingham, the 20 year old striker found himself with acres of space, having been putclear by Franz Carr but he hesitated long enough for Steve Redmond to get in a saving tackle and the chance was lost.
But moments before the break Paul Simpson, who had previously benefited from the slack marking of full-back Gary Fleming, found space on the left of the area but with all the time in the world he drove wide of the Forest net, a miss as bad as that of Campbell’s earlier on.
Half-time – Manchester City 0 Nottingham Forest 0
Not for the first time this season City began the second period showing greater urgency and endeavour although the accuracy of their shooting had not improved as McCarthy demonstrated with a fierce drive from the edge of the area.
A complicated three man free-kick, after Johnny Metgod had obstructed Mark Lillis, went so badly wrong that it provoked more amusement in the stands than danger to the Forest goal.
There were narrow escapes at both ends in a space of a couple of minutes when Simpson cleared off the City line with Siddell beaten then Stuart Pearce called upon to head away from under the Forest ar.
In the 71st minute however, Nottingham broke the deadlock with Neil Webb turning in Pearce’s low cross at close range.
Eleven minutes later Forest increased their lead when Campbell this time made no mistake heading in Carr’s cross from close range.
City seemed doomed, but with five minutes remaining Davies pulled one back. Sadly for the home team it was too little too lateand City have now gone 11 matches since their last victory.
