MATCH REPORT FROM THE IRISH INDEPENDANT 27TH DECEMBER 1989
The deadly goalscoring instincts of £1 Million striker Clive Allen earned Manchester City, their first victory under Howard Kendall.
Allen’s delicate chip over Norwich goalkeeper Bryan Gunn with four minutes remaining lifted City off bottom place in the First Division in Kendall’s first game in charge at Maine Road.
It was an inspired substitution by the new City boss to bring on Allen and Ian Brightwell for the tiring Gary Megson and Trevor Morley.
Until that 65th minute double substitution, the two sides had largely cancelled each other out, although City had created the majority of the chances.
