PETER BARNES IS BROUGHT DOWN IN THE BOX AND GARY OWEN SCORES THE SUBSEQUENT PENALTY
FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 26TH FEBRUARY 1989
The following Tuesday, Norwich City travelled to Maine Road with future Blues Bond, Ryan and (fleetingly) Fashanu in their team, and the Canaries gained a point in a see-saw game that ended 2-2.
Peters and McGuire were the guiding forces behind the visitors’ opener, setting up Robson to beat Corrigan after 8 minutes with a low crisp shot. But it took the Blues only a further 9 minutes to get on level terms. Kidd had bad luck with two near strikes before Viljoen and Hartford linked up to provide a centre which Owen headed wide of Hansbury.
Chances a-plenty fell to the Blues during the first half, Kidd and Booth putting the Norwich ‘keeper under pressure, and Bames freed himself from Symonds’ close marking to get a ball across the goalmouth that evaded three City players.
The game took on a frantic pace after the break. It seemed that Kidd might re-establish our lead but Hoadley changed that scenario with a splendid tackle. Then along came a penalty to put us in front after 59 minutes. Syrnonds tripped Barnes in the area and Owen scored his second of the night from the spot, his 5th successful penalty of the season.
With 10 minutes left Corrigan blocked McGuire’s effort and Peters followed up to give the Canaries a share of the points. The Blues went all out for a winner, Owen and Channon both being denied by determined defending before the end.
