Howard Kendall’s cliffhangers clambered to First division safety as they completed their delirious Easter of six points by enjoying the sunshine and charity of Norwich.
From their restricted corner of the ground, some 2,000 fans soon had reason to go into full chorus with an affectionate rendering of “Blue Moon” after a fifth minute goal from Adrian Heath helped complete a run of eight League games undefeated.
Their Joy was underlined by the news that Luton had lost. Thus City’s survival was confirmed at Carrow Road where Kendall had lifted the title for Everton three seasons ago.
There were several hiccups along the way, but generally Norwich were reluctant spectators of a quick passing style which they like to claim as copyright.
This time there could be no debating whether Heath had scored an important goal following closely on his deflected effort which beat Sheffield Wednesday two days before.
Peter Reid, that studious manipulator of midfield movement, launched the approach from his pass, Mark Ward squeezed past Ian Culverhouse and brought Clive Allen into the picture. A swift ball from Allen’s right touchline position gave Heath space and time to shoot low across Brian Gun from the penalty-area corner with Norwich flat-footed.
There were no other goals but City should have managed at least two others before Norwich’s substitute Robert Fleck, back after missing three games through suspension, produced several determined if misdirected attempts to give his side an undeserved point
