ROY DALLEY WRITING IN THE SUNDAY MIRROR 15TH FEBRUARY 1987
Norwich’s Royal party was left short of fizz as Ken Brown’s side were held back by suffy Manchester City.
the Duchess of Kent was at Carrow Road to officially open Norwich’s £1.7M stand and, accompanied by the Royal Anglian Regimental Band, she released 2,000 balloons into the Norfolk countryside.
It was City who took the lead after 41 minutes when teenager Ian Brightwell capitalised on a mix up between goalkeeper Bryan Gunn and fullback Tony Spearing to stroke the ball into an empty net.
Three minutes later Norwich equalised when Ian Crook calmly curled a free kick past the City wall into the corner of Perry Suckling’s net.
The second half turned ugly with four players going into referee Roger Lewis’s notebook.
