A missed penalty by Ruel Fox gave manager Kevin Keegan cause for a double-take, for Peter Beardsley was meant to take it!. Michel Vonk brought down Darren Peacock in the 39th minute but when Fox, scorer of a penalty in Beardsley’s absence at Norwich the previous week, asked to take it, Pedro said ‘OK’.
Fox’s feeble effort was easily saved by City keeper Andy Dibble, who then also saved well from Darren Peacock and superbly from john Beresford.
Paul Kitson wasted a gilt-edged chance, set up by Beresford, when he fired straight at Dibble, and as United continued to dominate Lee and Fox fired wide while Cole, just a short time before his departure from Tyneside, rounded the keeper but found the final angle too tight.
City’s biggest let-off came on the hour . when a Paul Bracewell drive from the edge of the box deflected off Howey and rolled onto the post.
But the Blues twice could have pinched the win in the closing stages as first Paul Walsh lobbed just over then Peter Beagrie miscued a far—post volley following a Nicky Summerbee cross.
