Again the biggest attendance of the season turned out for what had now become an epic tie with the teams still in dispute after 210 minutes of Cup football.
Millwall were boosted by the return from a long injury lay-off of striker Teddy Sheringham. City had expected Millwall to make a charge from the start and the Londoners duly obliged as they caught the Blues cold. Goddard netted in virtually the first attack of the match, and Sheringham, the goal-maker, poached the second with only nine minutes gone.
City’s big following, despite the fact that it was an evening match in the south-east London and a long wayfrom home, was stunned, but the team hung on until half-time. Could the Kendall pep- talk at the break pull the Blues back from the brink? When the outstanding Paul Lake, just called into the England World Cup squad by Bobby Robson, scored 14 minutes into the second half to reduce the deficit, saving the tie at least seemed credible. That is until the live-wire Sheringham forced home Millwall’s third 25 minutes from the end to de-rail City’s fight-back.
