STEVE McHUGH WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 30TH AUGUST 1980
Steve MacKenzie, the teenager Malcolm Allison paid £250,000 for when he was in Crystal Palace’s reserves, gave the Manchester City coach a pick-me-up at Middlesbrough, after putting through his own goal!
MacKenzie gave City a 2-1 half-time lead to lift a side that has made a disastrous start to the season.
City must have feared the worst when in the 20th minute, MacKenzie slipped when attempting to clear a corner and prodded the ball past a luckless Keith MacRae, who was playing his first League game for five years in place of the injured Joe Corrigan.
Kevin Reeves got the equaliser, following up to push the ball home when Platt could only parry a Tommy Caton special. Then MacKenzie redeemed himself. It came a minute before the break when Daley feigned to strike a cross by Power, allowing MacKenzie the chance to hit the ball into the bottom corner.
Still the bad luck that has haunted the Blues continued as Boro snatched an equaliser in the last seconds through Yugoslav striker Bosco Jankovic.
