Kevin Moran will clear £60,000 from his testimonial at Old Trafford, and no-one will begrudge him a penny.
For this derby must rank the best-ever testimonial in terms of everything that matters like commitment, goals and entertainment.
Manchester United and Manchester City, under the lash of course preparing for the new season, did the Reds’ rugged defender proud.
… The expected presence of George Best no doubt helped bump up the crowd to 25,432 and there were angry mutterings when the erring Ulster-man failed to arrive.
… City, happily turning their backs on the dreadful defensive tactics they played for Arthur Albiston’s testimonial in May, went straight to the attack.
They took a sparkling lead in the 18th minute when Trevor Morley headed in a cross from Nigel Gleghorn, and United were fortunate to equalise with a penalty from Brian McClair four minutes later. For though Gleghorn was judged to have handled under challenge from Peter Davenport, the United man later admitted that it was his hand which had flipped at the ball.
United cashed in by taking the lead through Jesper Olsen on the half hour, but again with a slice of luck when the ball skidded off Neil McNab straight to the unmarked Dane.
City showed admirable spirit and equalised in the 67th minute with another goal from Morley.
But in the last quarter of an hour United stepped up the pressure and the Blues found it increasingly difficult to hold their First Division rivals.
Mark Hughes, McClair and Lee Martin al scored to give the Reds their handsome 5-2 victory…
