FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 11TH FEBRUARY 1989
United came to Maine Road and won 3-0. The bone-hard pitch made the game difficult but sad to say the visitors conquered the conditions and subdued any ideas City might have had of building on their previous week’s victory. As is usual in ‘derby’ games the exchanges were fast and furious but United took the lead after 23 minutes, when Sammy Mcllroy rounded Corrigan to leave Coppell an easy chance.
In the 38th minute it became 2-0, Mcllroy sending Jimmy Greenhoff away again to find Coppell. It has to be said, even if it was United, that his shot-cum-lob was placed magnicently to beat Corrigan, and half an hour later the game was clinched by Ritchie, playing in his first derby game.
