It looked as if Albion were set for a repeat performance of The Hawthorns game which ended in City losing 9-2 when Derek Kevan, who later joined City, put the visitors ahead with a simple goal after Trautmann could only parry a shot from Horobin.
Just before half-time Colin Barlow and Joe Hayes combined in a neat passing move which ended in Hayes finding McAdams with space and time to side-foot the equaliser.
Trautmann pulled off a string of fine saves to deny Albion the lead and on the occasion he was beaten, Griffin’s shot hit the post.
Ray Sambrook recently bought from Coventry City, came into the picture with a burst of speed down the left wing at the start of the second-half. He left Williams stranded and slipped across a perfect centre for Barlow to put City in front. Two minutes later Sambrook again started a move which led to City’s third goal. He centred to Hayes, who hooked the ball into the middle and McAdams headed his second goal past Sanders.
The Midlanders hit back but Trautmann again made four unbelievable saves. Kevan was mesmerised when Trautmann leaped from ‘nowhere’ to clutch one of his shots in mid-air.
Just before the final whistle McAdams completed his hat-trick breasting down a centre from Hayes before firing home.
