Young Manchester City goalkeeper Frank Swift was making only the fourth League appearance of his illustrious career, given his first team chance after City crashed to an 8-0 defeat at Wolves nine days earlier. Albion started brightly in conditions made difficult by heavy rain but fell behind to a goal scored by Alex Herd in the 20th minute.
Robbins equalised soon after, then netted again to give West Brom the lead at half-time. Albion piled on the pressure in the 2nd half and WG Richardson added a third goal in the 56th minute. He scored twice more to complete his hat-trick in the space of twelve minutes, then City's wing- half Jackie Bray reduced the deficit almost immediately.
West Brom pair Joe Carter and Teddy Sandford netted further goals in the closing stages to complete the rout.
