The replay may not have had the same thrills as the first encounter but Wednesday only played as well as they were allowed. They arrived with a sequence of 17 undefeated games since Billy Walker took over as their manager. But the bubbling Blues deservedly terminated that run.
Freddie Tilson set City on the road to victory with an 18th minute opening goal. Billy Dale floated over a free-kick and Tilson cleverly ran into position to hit a low shot past Brown.
Bobby Marshall put City further ahead in the 25th minute with a glorious header from a dropping free-kick taken by the mercurial Eric Brook on the left wing.
Immediately after the goals Wednesday ’keeper Brown made three supberb saves to keep out rampant City. Wednesday only made about four worthwhile attacks in the game and City’s 19 year old ’keeper, Frank Swift, showed a safe pair of hands. Tilson and skipper Sammy Cowan were both outstanding for City.
A reporter’s notes on the match said that the half-crown stand was closed half an hour before the kick- off and every seat was sold. (receipts were £4,537.14s.) Considering that there were no floodlights in those days and it was an afternoon kick-off, thousands of sick notes reached the factories the next day.
