I remember once we played Portsmouth on New Years Day at Maine Road. Bobby [Johnstone] came in looking fuckin awful. He’d been out celebrating Hogmany til god knows what time. He asked me to sneak him some aspirin for his thick head without the trainer seeing. He was in a right state. I had to point him down the tunnel towards the pitch. I didn’t think he had a cat in hell’s chance of getting through the game, never mind playing any serious part in it, and then, fuck me, he goes out and scores a hat-trick, all headers! I wouldn’t mind, but I’m sure he was still half pissed when he came off after the game. I couldn’t bloody believe what I’d seen. He sat there in the dressing room after the game, like the cat with the fuckin’ cream, but what could you say after what he’d done? I shouted to him “Hey you, you little Scotch x$*^! You’d better go out and get pissed every fuckin week! Taken from THIS SIMPLE GAME THE FOOTBALLING LIFE OF KEN BARNES as told by Jimmy Wagg |
