City lost their unbeaten home record because they could not match a versatile Liverpool forward line.
When the home forwards adopted more direct methods in the second hald it was too late to save the match. On a rain-lashed day the lowest home crowd of the season saw a thrilling if not polished, struggle
on a muddy pitch. .
Goals by Payne and Done in the 9th and 10th minutes gave Liverpool the inspiration they needed. Done followed with another in the 19th minute, and though Black pulled one back for the Blues in the 26th minute,
Taylor gave Liverpool a 4-1 advantage at haIf—time with a goal on the half hour. What a hectic spell!
City’s star performer, Roy Clarke, headed home a centre from Jackie Oakes in the 57th minute and Sidlow made a superb save from George Smith when it seemed that a City rally might succeed.
