World Cup referee Clive Thomas threw a controversial decision into fresh confusion last night.
The Welsh referee ignored a linesman’s flag as Brian Kidd scored to give Manchester City a 2-2 draw at Manchester United 10 minutes from the end.
“You could ask why I didn’t disallow the goal and you could be right, said Thomas. “It was just a matter of opinion.”
Asa Hartford, City’s Scottish international playing his last game before a three match ban, charged after the ball as United’s defence ran forward. After drawing Alex Stepney from his goal, Hartford rolled the ball to Kidd to break a scoring duck at Old Trafford since his £100,000 transfer to Arsenal three years ago.
“I felt it was too late then because I had already given a goal,” said the referee, “And having given it I thought it was wrong to change my mind. The linesman was right to signal and he still feels the player was offside.”…
