Joe Corrigan, Manchester City’s giant goalkeeper stood between Luton and a stunning League Cup victory at Maine Road last night.
He needed to be at his most brilliant as eager Luton came close to winning against the side that toppled champions Liverpool just three days earlier.
Corrigan saved superbly from both Fuccillo and Steve Buckley in the second half. Yet Luton should have got the ball past him with seconds of injury time left.
Corrigan could only parry a shot from Ron Futcher, but Gary Heale slid the rebound wide of an empty net.
That took the game into extra time and now the teams must replay this third round tie again at Villa Park next Tuesday or Wednesday.
Luton had their luck in the 24th minute of the first half when Paul Futcher brought down Mike Channon. Linesman Frank Phipps deputising for referee Roger Fitzpatrick, he twisted his ankle in the 10th minute, refused the claim.
And the stand-in ref also disallowed a ‘goal’ by Barnes, City’s most consistent forward, in the 34th minute.
