Kevin Bond’s revitalised Manchester City were certainly up against it in the 2nd leg of this League Cup tie, they were 1-0 down from the first leg at Maine Road and now without the services of his experienced ‘footsoldiers’ Gerry Gow, Phil Boyer, Bobby McDonald and Tommy Hutchison, and had not won at Anfield for 25 years.
As it was, Citys very young side put in a magnificent performance and deserved to have at least taken the tie into extra time.
Unfortunately for City they went 2-0 down on aggregate in the 21st minute when Kenny Dalglish forced a corner over the line having first having his shot saved by Joe Corrigan.

Bond’s side went on all out attack in the second half, and just six minutes after half time. Steve McKenzie’s shot from outside the box was too hot to handle for Ray Clemence, and the onrushing Kevin Reeves despatched the ball past the Liverpool custodian into the net to give City a chance.
That chance came in the 72nd minute. Gary Buckley hung a cross into the box and David Bennett rose majestically to beat England’s Ray Clemence to the ball, the young forwards header looked goal-bound, however it struck the under side of the bar and was cleared off the line. And City were out.
