REPORT FROM THE SUNDAY TRIBUNE 8TH JANUARY 1989
A 12th minute penalty from Neil McNab earned Manchester City a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup after a nerve tingling tie with Leicester City at Maine Road yesterday.
Referee Brian Hill of Kettering had no hesitation in pointing to the spot when central defender Alan Paris handled a shot from Paul Moulden and Midfielder McNabb hammered the penalty into the top corner.
Leicester fought back and Manchester City keeper Andy Dibble had to save brilliantly from Ali, Mauchlen and Paul Reid before half time.
City began the second half with a flourish, Moulden going clear through only for his shot to be partly stopped by Paul Cooper and cleared up by Simon Morgan on the line.
Mark Seagraves, apparently injured, came off, being replaced by Scott, whose first torch after 52 minutes was a near-post header Which forced Cooper into a reflex save at the foot of a post.
Mauchlen and Biggins were involved in a series of incidents which led to Mauchlen being booked in the 56th minute As the tie hotted up.
Dibble save brilliantly again, this time from Paul Reid as Leicester fought for an equaliser.
But the City keeper breathed a sigh of relief when Nicky cross hammered his shot over the bar from close range.
The game became Scrappy but Leicester had most of the ball and Cross capped a fine run with a left foot shot just wide.
Leicester wasted a glorious chance when Nicky Cross blasted over the bar from close range but Manchester finished on top with David White and Ian Brightwell missing openings.
