FROM MEL MACHIN’S ‘TEAM TALK IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 7TH JANUARY 1989
I knew the Leeds game was going to be very difficult. Neither of us give much away. And I‘m afraid that in the second half against Leeds, it shone through just how much we need something extra.
Not in the first half because I thought we caused Leeds plenty of problems then. It was when we had to change our pattern, after losing Paul Lake with an ankle injury, that we found it difficult.
I’m still very annoyed and disappointed that we had a goal, by Wayne Biggins, disallowed just before half-time. I’ve seen the video and I can’t see a foul. What I cannot understand is that a referee, standing only 5- l0 yards away from the incident, awards a goal and then allows his decision to be changed by a linesman some 40 yards away!
The disallowed goal was the big talking point in our dressing room at the interval. That and the fact we should have had a penalty when Ian Brightwell was brought down. The Leeds defender ran straight into him!
The biggest disappointment was that we didn’t win when we had such a magnificent crowd, more than 33,000 and the biggest crowd anywhere in the Second Division this season.
