Manchester City’s pursuit of that long-sought away success was again blunted when Leeds United took an early lead at Elland Road today.
Ken De Mange, a £75,000 signing from Liverpool this week, headed a glorious goal giving the Blues’ on-loan goalkeeper Bobby Mimms no chance.
However, City also had their moments in a fast and furious Roses battle. Ian Scott going agonisingly close shortly before half time.
City found themselves trailing after just eight minutes.
A skilful build-up with Sheridan, a one time Maine Road schoolboy protege, paved the way as he neatly found Snodin with a fine ball on the inside of Gidman.
Snodin sprinted for the line before cutting the ball back into the middle where De Mange headed a powerful debut goal that gave City’s on loan goalkeeper no chance.
City’s best early attempts came when Simpson shot over and Stewart went close with an attempts came when Simpson shot over and Stewart went close with an attempt that shaved the crossbar.
… Stewart was again in the thick of the action, getting on the end of a Gidman right-flanking cross. But his header lacked pace and power, with Day again saving comfortably…
Half-time: Leeds Utd 1, Man City 0
… The Leeds pressure paid a further dividend in the 66th minute when Snodin scored with a clinical right-footed shot after Taylor had dragged the ball in from the left.
… In a last, desperate rally Stewart struck the foot of a post following a Gidman free kick and both Varadi and Adcock tried unsuccessfully to force the ball in.
