FROM THE PRESS BOX
Even in his 60s hey-day, Francis Lee never had a greater influence on a Manchester City match than he had on Saturday. Only hours after wining his battle for control at Maine Rd, Lee took his seat in the Director’s Box for the first time as chairman and set the whole place alight. …Suddenly the old ground was alive again. Thousands of Blue and White balloons fluttered up into the winter sky. A light plane circled the stadium trailing a banner which read ‘Welcome Francis’ There was magic in the air. Magic on the terraces. And most importantly of all, magic on the pitch. …You could almost feel sorry for poor Ipswich who must have felt like gatecrashers at a welcome home party. They weren’t just playing Manchester City, they were up against a team which would have run through a brick wall to please their new Chairman. And in front of 28,000 supporters who just knew that a messiah had arrived. The combination was irresistable. MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS
