PETER GARDNER’S VERDICT IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 5TH NOVEMBER 1977
City had fight and flair but precious little finishing fire as they slumped to their third successive away defeat in the League today.
Portman Road has never been a lucky ground for the Blues and their title hopes were given another severe jolt today as they fought in vain to wipe out the shock of that early Mariner goal.
Channon and Kidd battled hard enough, but got little change from Hunter and Osman. Barnes rarely revealed his exciting potential, although he was often afforded the attention of two defenders, with Ipswich dragging back Mills to support Stirk on his League debut.
After the break, City took command, but the chances were few and far between.
the outcome was yet another disappointing defeat which must place a question mark over City’s ability to stay the title-course.
